The Pas de Calais is a department in Northern France.

Late September 2023. We are doing a circuit starting in Dunkirk and circling round inland to Arras then back to the coast, Boulogne, Calais, ferry to Dover.

Disastrous start

After getting off the Ferry there was an awful dual-carriageway to navigate, full of huge articulated lorries. After a mile or so, just after a roundabout, Barbara’s front wheel hit a deep pothole and she was thrown off, into the road. there was a nervous sixty seconds spent getting her up off the ground and onto the grass verge. All of her limbs seemed to be working so after a few minutes recovery-time we set off again. At the hotel later, taking off her jacket revealed a blood-soaked fleece, her arm was badly grazed. We cleaned it up and made a rudimentary dressing from our first-aid kit. Went out to dinner – a Japanese restaurant just around the corner from the hotel – you don’t come to France to eat Japanese – it was very good though.

Next morning we found a pharmacy where a very helpful lady provided ointment and sticky gauze dressing. This worked well and we bought another couple for future application.

Barbara, with recovering elbow, we find artificial sheep in the sculpture park. Also a modern art museum, very interesting.
And a walk around town finds the fanciful old bath house, now not functioning.
Then a 12km ride mainly off-road on paths through woods, to Bergues, where we had an evening walk around the battlements, listening to the famous carillon of the church clock, 50 bells ringing on the hour.
